No school. No homework. No classroom. No schedule someone else made for you. You wake up at six years old in the ancient world and the whole world is just there β open, waiting. Sounds like a dream. It wasn't. By the time you were six, you were already working. By twelve you were doing things most modern adults would find genuinely difficult. By your mid-teens you were a fully functioning adult capable of keeping yourself and others alive. Modern childhood β protecting children from responsibility until their late teens β is a few hundred years old at most. For most of human history, childhood looked nothing like what we know today. In this video: How researchers found toddler finger marks pressed into the clay walls of Rouffignac Cave in France β and how at Gargas Cave a baby's handprint sits beside an adult's with color blown over both of them together, 25,000 years ago. How children's footprints are pressed into the floors of Pech Merle and Chauvet, meaning ancient children weren't observers of these rituals β they were participants. How Hadza children as young as five can gather half their own daily calories independently. How archaeologists found child-sized atlatls β real working spear-throwing weapons scaled for small hands β proving adults deliberately made functional weapons for children to train with from pre-adolescence. How child mortality ran between 30 and 50 percent β and how a three-year-old buried at Sunghir in Russia 34,000 years ago was covered in more hand-carved ivory beads than any adult at the site. Modern childhood gave children more safety and more protection. What it took away was the thing ancient children had from the very beginning β the sense that they were already needed, already capable, already enough. They didn't need to grow up to be useful. They already were. DISCLAIMER: Ethnographic comparisons with modern hunter-gatherer communities are used as proxies for prehistoric childhood behavior, as is standard in archaeological and anthropological research. Archaeological findings and dates reflect current academic consensus at time of publication and may be subject to revision as new evidence emerges.
