At the Indian Air Force's annual press conference on 3 October 2026, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh admitted the IAF's numbers are decreasing — and said it needs at least 36 to 40 new aircraft every year. Where does that number come from? There's an equation behind it, and this short decodes it. Need = Shortfall + Retirements. The IAF needs 42 squadrons and has about 29 — a gap of 13. From around 2028 the Jaguars begin retiring, followed gradually by the MiG-29s and Mirages — 12 more squadrons over the next 10 to 15 years. That's roughly 25 squadrons, about 450 fighter jets, to find. Where will they come from? 180 Tejas Mk1A are on order, and 114 Rafales were cleared on 12 February 2026, with more than 90 to be built in India. The rest has to come from the Tejas Mk2 and India's own stealth fighter, AMCA. And the speed of the whole equation depends on one thing: engines. The Air Chief said India needs to decide on at least one India-made fighter jet engine. Asked about Pakistan reportedly getting Chinese stealth jets, his answer was: a cause for concern, but not a no-go situation. Because strength = jets × integration. Jets can be bought; integration can't — and India showed it in Operation Sindoor.
