🤸‍♀️💚🤸‍♀️Dorothy first learned how to do a back handspring in about 10 minutes on our lawn when she was about 7 years old. She used to do them all the time. She told me this week she hasn’t done one in over a year and was scared. I asked her if I could spot her on some. She still has it! But now, she hesitates and double guesses herself… a feeling I remember so well as a young girl! When I was about 13 years old I wanted to be like my big sister and be a cheerleader. I quit soccer and basketball and decided to try out. It took me years to get a back handspring. (So I was thrilled when D learned so young and quick!) And it wasn’t that I couldn’t do it, it was that I wouldn’t do it alone without a spotter. After years of hard work, I became a confident tumbler. And once or twice a year I’d make myself do a few to show that I still got it. I’ve kept my back handspring for all these years up until 2022 when I tore my ACL again. So here I was trying to give my daughter advice on the exact same thing that I needed to hear. We talked about trusting ourselves, trusting our bodies and trusting each other. We talked about the importance of confidence and follow-through because if we don’t, we can get seriously hurt. Funny how the older we get, the wiser we get. Yet, somehow that wisdom makes us less brave. We both agreed we don’t want fear to get in the way of something we’ve both worked for. So the plan is to practice over the coming weeks and get our confidence up to do them again on our own! Stay tuned…🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️
