Surah Al-Jumu‘ah (The Friday) — Meaning in English (Surah 62, 11 verses) 1. Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth glorifies Allah—the King, the Holy, the Almighty, the Wise. 2. He is the One who sent among the unlettered people a Messenger (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) from among themselves, reciting His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom, though before that they were clearly misguided. 3. And He also sent him to others who have not yet joined them. Allah is All-Powerful, All-Wise. 4. This is Allah’s فضل (grace), which He gives to whom He wills. Allah is the Owner of great bounty. 5. The example of those who were given the Torah but did not act upon it is like a donkey carrying books. Evil is the example of those who deny Allah’s signs. Allah does not guide wrongdoers. 6. Say, “O Jews, if you claim that you are Allah’s chosen people over others, then wish for death, if you are truthful.” 7. But they will never wish for it because of what their hands have sent ahead (their deeds). Allah knows the wrongdoers well. 8. Say, “The death you are trying to escape will surely meet you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will inform you of what you used to do.” 9. O believers! When the call for prayer is made on Friday, hurry to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if only you knew. 10. When the prayer is finished, disperse through the land and seek Allah’s bounty, and remember Allah often so that you may succeed. 11. But when they saw trade or entertainment, they rushed toward it and left you standing. Say, “What is with Allah is better than entertainment and trade, and Allah is the best Provider.” Short lesson: Surah Al-Jumu‘ah teaches us to value Allah’s guidance, act upon knowledge, prepare for the Hereafter, and give importance to Jumu‘ah (Friday) prayer over worldly distractions.
