BBC One's programming was briefly paused because of the destructive weather, with teams rushing to get the channel back up and running. At the time, the flagship channel was broadcasting Nicky Campbell’s debate show "The Big Questions". "The Big Questions" focuses on a series of moral, ethical and religious dilemmas where a studio audience full of experts and members of the public debate a series of key topics. BBC One started to glitch at 11:02am, time in England, with images and audio going in and out of focus. But broadcasting then dropped off a minute later, with the filler being shown with the message that said “We are sorry for the break in this programme and are trying to correct the fault.”. An announcer followed the shock with a statement which said: “This is BBC One, I’m sorry but due to technical problems we’ve lost contact with "The Big Questions" studio in Salford.”, the announcer added: “It seems that the stormy conditions up in Salford are causing us some problems. We are working as hard as we can against the weather to get back to Big Questions and Nicky in Salford as quickly as we can.” The BBC initially thought the technical issue was resolved. Despite the announcer thanked the channel’s viewers for “bearing with us” amidst the weather chaos, however, it appeared technical issues weren’t over yet for BBC One. BBC producers attempted to get the show back on air, but failed. The announcer said: “Unfortunately we’re not able to go back to "(The) Big Questions" in Salford. Please do bear with us one second, while we figure out what we’re going to do this morning.” Moments later, the BBC were able to return to the broadcast as normal. Storm Ciara is the worst storm to affect Britain in seven years and was the first of a pair of European windstorms to impact the United Kingdom and Ireland at peak intensity less than a week apart, followed later by Storm Dennis. Ciara caused widespread wind and flooding damage across both North America and Europe, and at least 18 fatalities.
