Welcome to Episode 93 of Comeback Conversations with Dr. Gregory Clarke as we continue along the Dynasty Path with an essential financial literacy teaching: Credit Card Interest — How It Works & How It’s Calculated. The conversation begins with the Comeback Collective Circle examining economic pressures that can affect our everyday circulation power. From there, Dr. Gregory Clarke transitions into a subject that impacts millions of consumers but is often misunderstood: the actual mathematics behind credit card interest. We use credit every day—but do we understand exactly what we're paying for that access to leverage? This episode breaks down the mechanics behind credit card interest so you can move from simply receiving a statement to understanding how the numbers on that statement are produced. Dr. Clarke begins with five key principles, including the Average Daily Balance, Daily Periodic Rate, Finance Charge Formula, paying balances in full, and understanding that different transactions may carry different APRs and terms. We then go deeper into the Average Daily Balance Method. Your credit card issuer may determine your balance at the end of each day during the billing cycle, add those daily balances together, and divide the total by the number of days in the cycle. That average becomes an important component in determining the interest you may owe. The teaching then introduces a straightforward interest calculation: Average Daily Balance × Purchase APR × Days in Billing Cycle ÷ 365 Rather than simply presenting the formula, we walk through a working example demonstrating how balances, APR, and time combine to produce an interest charge. In this episode, we explore: • How credit card interest works • Average Daily Balance explained • Understanding APR and the Daily Periodic Rate • The credit card interest calculation formula • How the number of days in a billing cycle affects interest • A practical worked example • Why carrying a balance matters • Different APRs for different types of transactions • Understanding the real cost of financial leverage The Comeback Collective Circle also expands the conversation into car notes, mortgage amortization, borrowing strategies, and some of the financial traps that can keep consumers making payments without fully understanding the long-term cost. The objective isn't fear of credit. It's awareness. Credit can be a form of leverage, but leverage without financial literacy can become expensive. If we're going to use OPM—Other People's Money—we should understand how that money is priced. Don't just know your credit limit. Know your APR. Know your balance. Know your agreement. Know the mathematics. Because greater financial awareness creates the possibility for greater financial control. That's how we continue building the Dynasty. If this conversation adds value to you, consider supporting the platform and the work of the Comeback Collective Circle.
