Female founders got under 1% of Swedish venture capital. Investors blamed deal flow. Michaela Berglund built Feminvest, a network of 55,000 women investors, and took 1,700 applications in a year. This is TBLI Radical Truth with Robert Rubinstein. Berglund tested the industry's favourite excuse and it did not survive contact with the evidence. Her argument: the deal flow was always there, the problem is that women build and run companies without ever owning them, and a community you have followed for years is a better underwriting tool than a pitch deck you read last week. Michaela Berglund is founder and CEO of Feminvest, Sweden's largest hub for female entrepreneurs and investors. She worked on IPO processes after several years in London, took a company public in 2021 as its largest woman owner, and now runs an Article 8 fund investing in companies at least 50% women owned at founding. WHAT'S COVERED - Hearing in 2017 that women received less than 1% of funding in Sweden, and going to the funds to ask why - The deal flow excuse, and the 1,700 companies that applied to a first-time fund in just over a year - Why she built the investor community first, and the founders followed - Community-based venture capital as the answer to spray and pray: following companies since 2018 before writing a cheque - The pre-seed cheque of 3 million krona for 10%, and the bid at 95 million - Six investments since the summer, two already marked at 2.5 and 3 times cost - The ownership test: 50% women owned at founding, and why she does not care about the CEO's gender - Women sit on 25% of boards and 35% of management, and own 1% at exit - 65% of her LPs are women, writing 100,000 euro tickets, and most are first-time fund investors - The observation nobody expects: her male investors make introductions, and not one female investor has - Six months of engagement then silence, and why saying no quickly is the kinder answer - 85% of decision makers in venture and private equity are men, and the 20% discount applied to a woman's pitch - Filtering out the pseudo billionaires who want the data room and never write a cheque CHAPTERS 00:00 Meeting Michaela Berglund and Feminvest 01:34 2017: women received less than 1% of funding in Sweden 02:06 "It's a deal flow problem": what the funds told her 02:41 Building the investor community first, and the deal flow that followed 04:11 The fund: an Article 8 vehicle targeting the S in ESG 04:43 1,700 applications in a year, and six investments 05:17 Community-based venture capital versus spray and pray 06:57 3 million krona for 10%, and a bid at 95 million 09:10 A 10 million euro proof of concept fund 12:59 The ownership test: 50% women owned at founding 14:02 25% of boards, 35% of management, 1% of the wealth at exit 14:35 65% of the LPs are women 16:47 Why saying no quickly is kinder than a forever maybe 21:02 The male investors who make introductions, and the women who do not 21:31 A network of 55,000, growing by thousands a month 30:13 1,400 people in Stockholm, and bringing men into the network 38:27 How LP diversity rules gave women seats but not shares 39:36 Unconscious bias, and the 20% discount on a man's pitch 42:59 85% of decision makers in venture and private equity are men 45:04 How listeners can help ▶ Subscribe for a new Radical Truth conversation every week: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDBhRVM93uUnAAtqOMIz_yg?sub_confirmation=1 RELATED EPISODES - Joshua Haynes, Masawa, on founder psychology as the risk nobody prices. - Kumar Garg, Renaissance Philanthropy, on building the fund layer that does not exist yet.
