Subscribe to The Daily Heretic for more exclusive interviews with media insiders revealing how celebrity PR, tabloid journalism and the battle for public attention really work behind the scenes. Watch the latest clips here: https://www.youtube.com/@hereticsclips/videos Are some celebrities really victims of press intrusion — or are they playing a carefully managed publicity game while complaining about the consequences? Former showbiz PR figure Lauren The Insider joins Andrew Gold for a provocative look inside the complicated relationship between celebrities, publicists, photographers and the British press. Having worked behind the scenes in celebrity PR, Lauren argues that the public is often shown only one side of the story. Stars may condemn intrusive photographers and unwanted headlines, yet the publicity industry also depends heavily on maintaining attention. So how much of what appears spontaneous is actually being orchestrated behind closed doors? Lauren explains the machinery of celebrity publicity: carefully timed appearances, stories offered to journalists, relationships cultivated with editors and photographers, and opportunities designed to keep particular names in the headlines. According to Lauren, some public figures understand this system extremely well — and she reserves the term “grifters” for those she believes aggressively pursue fame and publicity while simultaneously presenting themselves as unwilling victims of media attention. But Andrew pushes back. Where does strategic publicity end and genuine press intrusion begin? A celebrity choosing to promote themselves doesn't automatically give journalists unlimited access to their private life. Nor does cooperating with the media on one occasion mean consenting to relentless scrutiny thereafter. Lauren's argument instead exposes the murky territory where publicity, privacy and money collide. And there is another uncomfortable question: who actually benefits from the outrage? A supposedly unwanted photograph can generate enormous coverage. A public feud with the press can produce another round of headlines. Complaining about media attention can itself become a media story. In the modern attention economy, Lauren argues, even negative publicity can keep somebody culturally relevant. For an insider who has seen how stories are generated and managed, the distinction between celebrity victim and publicity operator isn't always as straightforward as audiences might imagine. So when a famous person complains that the press simply won't leave them alone, Lauren wants you to ask one question: What was happening between their PR team and the media before the cameras arrived?
