Scott Pilgrim vs. the World has so many clever jokes, but sometimes the funniest moments are the ones where the dialogue barely matters. Scott is inside with Wallace when Knives suddenly shows up at the door. Wallace answers. Knives innocently asks: “Is Scott here?” Wallace starts: “Uh, you know what…” And before he can even finish the sentence… SCOTT LAUNCHES HIMSELF THROUGH THE WINDOW BEHIND HIM. 😭💀 Not the door. Not another room. Not hiding in the bathroom. This man sees his ex-girlfriend at the front door and decides the most reasonable escape route is THROUGH ACTUAL GLASS 😂 Then Wallace, somehow maintaining a completely straight face, tells Knives: “He just left.” Technically… HE DID. 😭😭😭 But Edgar Wright somehow makes the joke even better. Scott realizes he forgot his jacket… so his arm casually reaches BACK through the broken window, grabs it, disappears again… and then he runs past behind Knives while she’s STILL standing there talking to Wallace. The entire gag plays out around her while she somehow notices absolutely nothing. That’s why this scene is such a perfect example of visual comedy. The dialogue itself is ridiculously simple. “Is Scott here?” “He just left.” But everything happening in the background turns those two sentences into comedy gold. And the casting makes it even better: Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim already has that permanently-panicked energy… while Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells delivers the lie with the calmness of somebody who has clearly dealt with Scott’s nonsense MANY times before 😂 Watching Kieran Culkin here after seeing him as Roman Roy in Succession is also hilarious because Wallace already has flashes of that savage, completely-unbothered delivery. Scott is literally escaping through a window. Wallace: “Yeah… sorry.” 😭💀 And Knives just accepts it. No questions. No investigation. Meanwhile Scott is probably halfway down the street. This movie understood that sometimes the funniest possible punchline isn’t another line of dialogue… it’s a grown man diving through a window because his teenage ex knocked on the door. 😂 Scott: avoiding an awkward conversation. Normal person: “I’m not home.” Scott: 🪟🏃‍♂️💨 Edgar Wright really made every inch of the frame part of the joke. #ScottPilgrim #MichaelCera #KieranCulkin #ScottPilgrimVsTheWorld #EdgarWright #KnivesChau #MovieClips #ComedyMovies #FunnyScenes #MovieMemes
