My West - A cold-blooded killer provokes a legendary gunslinger into coming out of retirement to see who's really the fastest gun in the West. My West (1998) Director: Giovanni Veronesi Writers: Vincenzo Pardini, Giovanni Veronesi, Leonardo Pieraccioni Stars: Leonardo Pieraccioni, Harvey Keitel, David Bowie Genre: Western, Spaghetti Western, Drama, Comedy Country: Italy Language: English Release Date: December 18, 1998 (Italy) Also Known As: Il mio West Filming Locations: Campocatino, Vagli, Lucca, Tuscany, Italy Story: The idealistic lifestyle of an old West farmer, his Indian wife and half-breed son, who narrates the tale, is disrupted when his grandfather, an old gunslinger, shows up on the farm. Although looking to retire, the family is not happy with his return, given his past lifestyle and mistreatment of his family. Things get worse when another gunfighter shows up and terrorizes the town, trying to force the father into a gun fight. Review: Harsh reviews all round. This is an entertaining western with of course, bonus Bowie! A lovesong to Morricone of sorts and authentic as sphagettis can be in that it's filmed in Italy and made to look American with some American cast and some Italian but dubbed into each other's languages. It's slightly off putting with the lead in this and he's by far the weakest part of the film too sadly. But the plot whilst slightly thin and stereotypical isn't bad. Also not predicatable and I'd go so far as to argue this is possibly one of Bowie's finer parts where he doesn't look like he's trying to act. As much as I love Bowie (he's the reason I sought this film out in the first place) and he's been in some memorable films he wasn't the greatest actor a lot of the time but I forgave him for it as he wasn't terrible, just slightly distracting. Now in this, you could easily forget it's him. Kietel puts in a good performance as well. Overall it's very comic book but it's very well made considering it's shoestring and I think very harsh of the other reviews on here with some going so far as to ask how it even got made. It's better than most Hollywood tosh, even original films. And I think it sits well next to a lot of classic westerns. It's a shame it came out under the radar. I even had to seek out a region 1 dvd copy as I don't think it got a sniff in the uk market! Whilst of course it's nothing groundbreaking and could do with some small tweaks here and there it's a solid piece of entertainment regardless of if you're into westerns or not. Like me I can take or leave them unless there's something particularly epic about them (Leone, Ford, etc) but this one I didn't get bored once or even predict a couple of things. But the main elephant of course is Bowie. This is a rare opportunity to see him really act and play a very nasty villain too. Definitely recommend.
