The apple you are eating right now has 68% less nutritional content than its wild ancestor. That is not a conspiracy theory. That is from a research study at Canada's Apple Biodiversity Collection comparing over 1000 cultivated and wild apple species. For thousands of years, humans practised selective breeding without knowing the word for it. A farmer in ancient India would plant the seeds of his 50 best mangoes, discard the rest, and repeat the process across generations. Corn was domesticated from a wild Mexican grass called Teosinte around 9000 years ago in Southern Mexico. Watermelons were bitter and greenish-white 6000 years ago. Cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower all came from one single plant called Brassica Oleracea. Then in the 19th and 20th centuries, corporations entered the fruit business with millions of dollars and a completely different objective. Not the tastiest fruit. The most profitable one. One that could survive thousands of kilometres of transport, ripen predictably, look perfect on a supermarket shelf, and be produced at industrial scale. The banana that dominated global trade before 1950, called Gros Michel, was wiped out by the Panama Disease. The Cavendish that replaced it now dominates 99% of export trade. Scientists believe a new strain of the same disease is already spreading. The question this documentary is actually asking is not whether modern fruits are healthy. It is this: who decided what healthy means, and what did we lose in the process of making fruits more profitable? #FruitBreeding #FoodIndustry #Documentary ----- Listen our Documentaries on Spotify: https://spotify.openinapp.co/2xsdx Join our Whatsapp Channel: https://wa.openinapp.link/iszsm Mangesh Shinde Shorts: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIVpSU6kEPhP7EyKSqTmoZA Instagram : @thewillpowerstar https://www.instagram.com/thewillpowerstar/ Facebook : Mangesh Shinde https://www.facebook.com/thewillpowerstar LinkedIn : Mangesh Shinde https://www.linkedin.com/in/mangesh-willpowerstar/ About : The WillPower Star creates detailed, in-depth documentaries that go beyond the headlines.
