I came across an interesting dance game community in China that performs freestyle routines in public arcades in Shenzhen. The level of play was really interesting, and a crowd had gathered to watch. It reminded me of the old Dance Dance Revolution freestyle days back in 1999-2001. They were playing on Dance Super Station here, but it was running newer software. I hadn't seen this version before anywhere. The players had profiles attached to their QR codes and some players here were over level 90. I came back for a few times and I saw the same people here, day after day. So I figured they must be the local community here. I put my coin on the machine to play. They saw me. I'm the only white dude here haha! Then after some time passed, I noticed the same people started a new rotation. I'm like wtffffff haha! So I met a guy from Hong Kong who was visiting, and he helped translate for me, but the girl playing Roly Poly got super pissed that I wanted to play. No idea why. She got 3 credits in while I was waiting! I put it down to a cultural difference. In Latin America, they feed the machine with 30+ credits and nobody can play during that time, so it wasn't a big deal or anything. Anyway, after having my translator friend fight for a bit, I was finally allowed to play, but because the software was new, all the Chinese text was new too haha! So they put it on easy mode, on single player. I said I would fail out and try again, but they didn't want me to do that, so I jsut left. They have a bunch of other machines upstairs, so it was no big deal. The atmosphere on this machine is really good and people pass by all the time, looking into the arcade.
