We bought a fire truck for $5,000 without ever going to look at it—and without knowing if it would even run. Naturally, our plan was to get it started and take the whole crew to lunch! It’s Fire Truck Friday at C&C Equipment, and Clinton, Kevin, and Tucker are heading to the boys’ old school to rescue a fire truck that’s been sitting for a long time. We brought the service truck, batteries, and tools, but we didn’t really know what we were getting into. Once we get the cab tilted forward, we find the best part of the deal: a Detroit Diesel Series 60 14-liter engine rated at 500 horsepower, backed by an Allison automatic transmission. Now we just need to replace four dead batteries, check the fluids, and see whether this thing will start—and pull itself out of the holes it’s been sitting in. Then comes the drive home through Bloomington, where the crew discovers that this old truck has plenty of power and more buttons than we probably need. We even make good on the original plan and take it out for Mexican food. At the end, we walk through the truck’s condition and possible uses. Parts of the fire pump system are missing, but the engine and chassis could make it an interesting heavy hauler, service truck, or camper conversion.
