Watch the full debate at https://iai.tv/video/a-mad-world?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description Might we do better to give up the notion of mental illness? An ever growing number of people are being treated for mental illness. Yet critics warn that psychiatrists and big pharma have an interest in describing human behaviour as an illness or disorder. Richard Bentall is a Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Sheffield in the UK. He has edited and written several books, most notably Madness Explained, which was winner of the British Psychological Society Book Award in 2004, which rejects the concept of schizophrenia and advocates for a psychological approach to the psychoses. Lucy Johnstone is a senior lecturer in clinical psychology & counselling at University of West England, Bristol. Prior to this she spent 11 years working in the NHS as a clinical psychologist and has published widely in the area of critical approaches to mental health, including A Straight Talking Introduction to Psychiatric Diagnosis. Ann John is a Professor in Public Health and Psychiatry at the Swansea University Medical School. She chairs the National Advisory Group to Welsh Government on the prevention of suicide and self-harm and is an honorary consultant in Public Health medicine for Public Health Wales. #mentalhealth #whatismentalillness #whatisdepression Visit IAI.tv for our full library of debates, talks, articles and podcasts from international thought leaders and world-class academics.
