Fifth track, full atmosphere: The Marshall Tucker Band stretch out on 'Desert Skies' from 1977's Carolina Dreams "Desert Skies" is track five on The Marshall Tucker Band's 1977 album Carolina Dreams, the record that carried the band to its commercial and critical peak on Capricorn Records. While Carolina Dreams is best known for the Billboard Top 20 hit "Heard It in a Love Song," "Desert Skies" captures a different side of the album -- a slower-building, atmospheric arrangement led by Toy Caldwell's guitar and Jerry Eubanks' flute, with the band's signature jazz and country influences fully on display. The song's wide-open imagery fits a band that spent the mid-1970s constantly on the move, and it shows why The Marshall Tucker Band's albums could hold together as complete listens rather than just a run of radio hits. Nearly five decades later, Carolina Dreams still stands as one of the definitive Southern rock albums of the era, and "Desert Skies" remains a favorite deep cut for fans who dig past the singles. Noted for incorporating blues, country and jazz into an eclectic sound, The Marshall Tucker Band helped establish the Southern rock genre in the early 1970s. The "Marshall Tucker" in the band's name does not refer to a band member, but rather to a blind piano tuner from Spartanburg. While the band was discussing possible band names one evening in an old warehouse they had rented for rehearsal space, someone noticed that the warehouse's door key had the name "Marshall Tucker" inscribed on it, and suggested they call themselves "The Marshall Tucker Band," not realizing it referred to an actual person. Lead vocalist Doug Gray remains the only original member still active with the band. Key songs include "Can't You See" and "Heard It In a Love Song." Carolina Dreams, released in 1977, is the band's fifth studio album for Capricorn Records and the record that produced their highest-charting single, "Heard It in a Love Song."
