Purchased for an eye-watering $71,000, our long-term tester tackled high-speed dirt trails, heavy towing duties, and daily urban commutes to uncover every strength and weakness. On the trail, the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is an absolute powerhouse. Its Fox QS3 internal bypass shocks, steep approach angles, and robust 4WD system handle rough terrain and whoops with ease. The i-Force Max hybrid powertrain provides ample low-end torque for towing and climbing. Inside, physical knobs and toggle switches make controlling key functions effortless. However, daily ownership on pavement brings notable trade-offs. The cabin feels cramped for taller drivers and rear passengers, while the suspension delivers a busy, jittery ride on street pavement. Additionally, the four-cylinder sport exhaust emits an unrefined drone, and fuel economy averaged just 18 mpg — well short of EPA estimates. Reliability was stellar with zero mechanical issues, and the truck retained strong resale value with an appraisal of $61,000. Earning an Edmunds Rating of 6.5 out of 10, the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro remains an off-road beast, though its daily compromises make rival SUVs like the Lexus GX or Honda Passport easier to live with.
