In the Arab custom of the time, a prisoner who ate or drank from his captor was safe. On 4 July 1187, after the Battle of Hattin, Saladin had a drink cooled with snow brought for the captured King Guy of Jerusalem. The king drank, then passed the cup to Reynald of Châtillon, the one man Saladin had sworn to kill with his own hand. Saladin's answer, recorded by his biographer Ibn Shaddad, was aimed at the king: "You gave him the drink. I did not." 📖 Source: Baha al-Din Ibn Shaddad, The Rare and Excellent History of Saladin, trans. D. S. Richards (Ashgate) Reynald had attacked a caravan travelling under truce, and Saladin had vowed to kill him for it. Imad al-Din, Saladin's secretary, was in the tent and recorded what was said before the killing. Saladin asked Reynald how many times he would swear an oath and break it. Reynald answered, through an interpreter, that this had always been the custom of kings. Minutes later Saladin used the same phrase to the terrified king: it was never the custom of kings to kill kings, but this one had gone too far. Reynald's own words survive only in the interpreter's Arabic, so the Old French you hear is our reconstruction. A later French version says Reynald refused the cup, but the earlier accounts on both sides say he drank. Both men called it the custom of kings. Only one of them walked out of the tent. People ask how one person makes these. The answer is musayko.com, a platform I built to do it. It's open to other creators now. Which moment should we bring back next?
