Every natural disaster is rated on a scale, and every scale has a top. Today we go past it. You stand inside five disasters in a suit that survives anything: a tornado in Oklahoma, a hurricane off Mexico, a tsunami hitting a city on the Pacific coast, Yellowstone erupting, and an earthquake in southern Chile. Each one climbs its real scale, step by step, to the world record. Then the dial breaks and it keeps going: a tornado at the speed of sound, a hypercane that blasts seawater into the ozone layer, the wave that killed the dinosaurs, an eruption that melts Earth's whole mantle, and an earthquake strong enough to break the planet apart. Every number on screen is worked out from real physics: Fujita's own formula for tornado winds, the heat engine that drives hurricanes, the real records for tsunamis, eruptions and earthquakes, and the energy behind each magnitude. The suit is the only thing we made up. Chapters 0:00 Every scale has a top 0:16 Tornado: past F5 to F12 1:46 Hurricane: past Category 5 to a hypercane 3:17 Tsunami: taller than mountains 4:47 Volcano: past VEI 8 to a magma ocean 6:18 Earthquake: past 9.5 to magnitude 18.4 7:44 Which scale next? Quick notes on the science: Only one part is sped up: the asteroid's waves crossing the Pacific run 3,000x faster than real time (watch for the TIME-LAPSE badge). Past each record, the numbers show what physics says that disaster would need, not anything that has happened. Past VEI 8 and magnitude 9.5 we keep counting the same way, by volume and by energy. The 524 m Lituya Bay wave was a splash in a narrow bay that ran up a mountainside. Out at sea, tsunamis are far lower. The towns and the city are imagined, and nobody is in them. Where the numbers come from: Fujita (1971) and the 2021 re-analysis of the 1999 Bridge Creek to Moore radar data, the Saffir-Simpson scale and Hurricane Patricia (2015), Kerry Emanuel's potential intensity and hypercane papers (1995), Lituya Bay (1958) and Range et al. (2022) on the Chicxulub tsunami, Newhall and Self (1982) on the VEI, and the Gutenberg-Richter energy formula with the 1960 Valdivia earthquake. The last question on screen is for you: which scale should we break next?
