In Beyond the Episode 6 LIVE of EducationInContext, we examine the hidden expectations placed on Black women to educate, correct, support, comfort, and repair the people and systems around them. The argument is simple but disruptive: Saying “no” can be radical. When Black women are presumed to provide emotional labor, anti-racism education, mentorship, patience, and endless collaboration, declining that responsibility interrupts an expectation that was already coded into the relationship. And sometimes what gets labeled as “mean,” “difficult,” or “uncooperative” is actually a Black woman protecting her time, labor, peace, and ability to focus on the work that matters most. This conversation also raises a deeper question about anti-Blackness in schools: Should Black educators be responsible for repeatedly teaching adults how not to harm Black students or should institutions build structures, accountability, and consequences that make anti-Black behavior harder to reproduce? When does “collaboration” become unpaid emotional and racial labor?
