How did armies wage war underground when they could not see the enemy? This episode explains the tunnels, listening posts, countermines, and buried charges that turned the ground itself into a battlefield. From ancient siege mining to World War I trench warfare, follow how soldiers found enemy galleries, dug through wet sand and clay, and tried to destroy a hidden threat before it reached them. At Ambracia, defenders met Roman miners beneath their walls. At Rochester Castle, miners brought down a corner of the keep. On the Western Front, tunnellers used geophones to locate enemy digging and counterblasts to collapse tunnels. William Hackett's last rescue shows the human cost of that work. The Lochnagar mine at the Somme took months to prepare. Its explosion opened a huge crater, but could not secure the whole attack at La Boisselle. At Petersburg, a crater trapped the attackers it was meant to help. At Messines, mines worked as part of a coordinated assault. A later operation in Lima in 1997 shows why tunnels still mattered against fixed targets.
