The Vikings were a fascinating people. If you watched the TV series “Vikings” you’d know how difficult life used to be, when weak people and those without strength or capability didn't survive. People had to be tough, enduring harsh conditions like cold weather, little food, and few resources. But still, they did so well in coping with such conditions! So, what about the general living conditions of a traditional Vikings family and children? How did they live and thrive? Women enjoyed different levels of personal power in the Viking culture depending on their social rank and importance. Women who were "low-born" were more likely to receive little education, work at household chores from a young age, and be forced into marriage well below their ideal ages. Most women worked as farmers growing crops, and raising animals, and contributed substantially to domestic duties such as making clothes and preparing meals, but also often played key roles in community life such as owning land, and washerwomen who helped to keep the village clothed by beating cloth with smooth stones. According to historical records, Viking children did not attend school like we do today. The boys were instead taught everything about the men's jobs by their fathers, brothers, and uncles. Meanwhile, girls learned all about what it means to cook, cultivate, and care for household animals, as well as produce clothing, and how to sew garments alongside their mothers or aunts. By the age of 12-15 years old, both girls and boys would be able to function efficiently in a home and could work on a farm. This was because they would have been taught by their parents, as well as other close relatives who had already done so. Although generally speaking women were confined to domestic roles, there are exceptions such as when women decided to settle in new places together with male family members. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ #vikings #family #vikingscode Do you have any questions or other stuff you want to know?
