Few ships had as long and storied a career as the RMS Aquitania. Nicknamed ‘The Ship Beautiful’ for good reason - the Aquitania came at a really interesting time in history. Germany had dominated the transatlantic passenger routes at the turn of the century but then Cunard Line shocked the industry when they debuted the magnificent Mauretania and Lusitania. These ships were quick and palatial - but Cunard knew they’d need a third ship to round out their premiere lineup and ensure a weekly schedule across the Pond without fail. At the same time their rivals at the White Star Line were cooking up something special - bigger, even MORE luxurious than the Cunard greyhounds. Olympic and Titanic were set to bring an entirely new standard of comfort to the ocean and Cunard had to respond. In the early 1910s their star designer, Leonard Peskett, had the unenviable job of anticipating customer wants and engineering a vessel that would last at least in the 1920s. He probably couldn’t have anticipated that his pen strokes were drawing the lines for a ship that would last into the 1950s instead - a liner that would carry hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people from the poorest migrants to the wealthiest stars and industrialists, to wounded Tommies escaping the Dardanelles to GIs marching on Hitler’s troops nearly 30 years later. This is an epic saga in two parts - first the Ship Beautiful’s conception and introduction - tragically overshadowed by disasters and global conflict - her important role in a War that saw so many of her fleetmates lost. Then Part 2- her rise to Transatlantic dominance, the golden years at Sea and the unlikely series of events that meant this grand old lady of the sea would remain in service for close to four decades. Oceanliner Designs explores the design, construction, engineering and operation of history’s greatest vessels– from Titanic to Queen Mary and from the Empress of Ireland to the Lusitania. Join maritime researcher and illustrator Michael Brady as he tells the stories behind some of history's most famous ocean liners and machines!
