Wubi Zixing (五笔字型) is a way of typing Chinese characters based on how they're written rather than how they're pronounced. I really really like this way of typing Chinese, and it saddens me that most people don't bother learning Wubi or any other shape-based method like Cangjie, and instead opt for a phonetic method like Pinyin. I managed to learn Wubi to some amount of proficiency after a few months of practice after picking it up, and I've made this video because when I was learning Wubi, there were very few resources available in English, and I wished that that there were more. # Chapters 0:00 — Intro 1:42 — Five Brushstrokes 2:11 — Keys and Roots 4:17 — Types of Character Codes 5:40 — How to Deduce Full Codes of Single Characters 5:52 — Full Codes of Keyname Characters 6:03 — Full Codes of Non-Keyname Roots 7:54 — Full Codes of Offchart Characters 8:20 — Full Codes of Offchart Characters: Decomposition into Roots 13:24 — Full Codes of Offchart Characters: Roots to Full Codes 14:20 — Full Codes of Offchart Characters: Disambiguation Codes 17:30 — Disambiguation Codes: Final Stroke Exceptions 19:04 — Abbreviated Codes are Very Useful 19:48 — Flowchart for Single Character Input 19:55 — Multicharacter Word Input 21:23 — Flowchart for Multicharacter Word Input 21:26 — Keystroke Count Comparison 22:20 — Flaws with Wubi 23:07 — I really really like Wubi; it is epic. # Sources ## Information about the Wubi Zixing method itself These two books about Wubi by the inventor Wang Yongmin seem to contain largely the same content, with one just being an updated version of the other. I found the 1985 one first and only found the 1990 one later. - 《五笔字型计算机汉字输入技术》 by 王永民 in 1985 - 《电脑通用汉字输入法五笔字型:培训教材》 (Volume 1 of 4) by 王永民 and 张一平 in 1990 This other book by the inventor:《标准五笔字型软件 手册、教材、练习》by 王永民. - The only copy i can find of this book online is at this internet archive link, since the images on the official website are now broken. https://web.archive.org/web/20220309070704/http://www.wangma.net.cn/InfoMationDetail.aspx?sm=5&m=207 - The book also might not have gone through an official publisher or anything? it doesn't seem to have an ISBN and it's really hard to find any information about it anywhere else on the internet. ## Background Information Wubi is not very popular nowadays. Apparently, the usage rate is 3% by May 2022, though I'm not sure what population this "3%" is of (maybe due to my own poor reading comprehension), and couldn't find the original source of this statistic. The original page isn't there anymore, but can still be found on the Internet Archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20160321194821/http://www.yale.edu:80/chinesemac/wubi/xing.html. - This is a old webpage. You'll have to change your browser's text encoding — "Chinese Simplified (GB18030)" seems to work well — in order for the Chinese characters on the page to display correctly. Chromium browsers seem to have removed this option a while back, since most websites use Unicode now, but you can install a browser extension such as https://github.com/jinliming2/Chrome-Charset to get it back. - Note that the author of this webpage chose to translate some of the terminology different from how I did. - I found this page linked under an existing YouTube video about Wubi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_w-Q6hDzL8) by @jesseturland2243. Lookup the Wubi codes of characters you don't know how to decompose: - https://wubi.xuelai.com/ - https://www.iwubi.net/. This is also where I recorded the typing test clip.
