A talk presented at Composing with Spielrein: Contemporary Applications of Sabina Spielrein’s Work, an international interdisciplinary conference organised by the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Essex, in collaboration with the International Association for Spielrein Studies, 5–6 September 2026. This talk challenges the psychoanalytic dogma of separation and the broader tendency in philosophy and psychoanalysis to take the autonomous subject as a premise. Relying on Spielrein’s account, I suggest an alternative understanding of the subject as fundamentally non-autonomous and embedded in others. Accordingly, instead of treating separation as the unquestioned trajectory of subject formation, I propose the opposite trajectory: becoming the mother. 00:00 Introduction 00:40 Spielrein and Negative Psychoanalysis 02:45 The Separation Plot 04:30 Western Philosophy Against the Mother 06:15 The Childish Subject 08:05 Why the Mother, Not the Woman 10:05 Freud’s Subject vs. Spielrein’s Subject 14:10 Destruction, Love, and Self-Dissolution 16:10 The “We-Psyche” 17:35 Kristeva, the Semiotic, and the Maternal 20:15 What Lies Beneath the Subject 22:25 What Comes After Separation? 23:00 Becoming the Mother 26:20 Zarathustra as Mother 28:20 The Pregnant Subject 30:05 Self-Sacrifice and the Maternal Subject Julie Reshe is a negative philosopher, psychoanalyst (also negative), and author of Negative Psychoanalysis for the Living Dead (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023) and Negative Essays: On Death, Love, and Depressive Realism (Negative Press, 2026).
