Before he was born, his parents had three daughters and no son, and after doctors failed them a family friend sent his father to the Lubavitcher Rebbe in New York. His father waited in line, asked for a blessing, and was told to promise the boy a Jewish education. Zuckerberg was born less than eighteen months later. At his bar mitzvah his father gave him the dollar bill the Rebbe had handed over. Years later, when Facebook was formally incorporated, Zuckerberg says he took that dollar out and deposited it in the bank on the day the company was founded. Professor Jiang uses that story to take apart the version everyone learned from the movie. His argument is that Zuckerberg was never simply lucky. Jiang went to Yale in 1995, remembers the printed freshman facebook and exactly how valuable a digitized version would have been, and points out that no university would casually let a student privatize student data and open it to outsiders. At Harvard, the president was Larry Summers. The faculty advisor to Harvard Chabad was Alan Dershowitz. Jared Kushner and Natalie Portman were prominent members. Zuckerberg attended events there as a freshman. From there Jiang lays out the rest of the pattern. Investors including Peter Thiel gave Zuckerberg class B shares carrying ten times the voting power of the public class A shares, leaving him in permanent total control, something Jiang says is true of only Google's founders among the big platforms. In 2016 Cambridge Analytica pulled data on fifty million Facebook users to microtarget voters for a Trump campaign run by Steve Bannon and Jared Kushner, while Sheryl Sandberg, a protege of Larry Summers, sat at the top of Facebook. Jiang also raises the claim that a DARPA program looking for exactly this kind of personal data became Facebook, and the notorious early message where Zuckerberg brags about how much Harvard students trust him.
