Above one of the city's gateways stood ten mysterious signs that nobody can confidently read today. From there, we follow thousands of years of Indian history — from Mehrgarh and the Indus Valley Civilization to the age of Buddha and Mahavira, Ashoka and the Mauryan Empire, the Kushans, the Gupta period, powerful merchant communities and the Chola maritime world. We travel through the Indian Ocean with merchants such as Abraham Ben Yiju, see Persian become an important language of administration under Indo-Islamic states, and explore the Delhi Sultanate, the Bhakti and Sufi traditions, Guru Nanak, Vijayanagara and the rise of the Mughal Empire. Then come the Marathas, the East India Company, the Battle of Plassey, colonial taxation, railways, the rebellion of 1857, Indian soldiers in the First World War, Gandhi, Ambedkar, the Bengal famine and independence in 1947. But this story is not simply a list of kings and empires. Dynasties changed. Languages mixed. Religions travelled. Merchants crossed oceans. Political borders appeared and disappeared. And underneath it all remained a much older problem: how do millions of people organize life around rivers, rainfall and the next harvest? The stone reservoir at Dholavira and the water pump of modern India belong to the same story. Crowns changed. The next harvest still needs water. 💬 Which force mattered most in India's history: its rivers, its merchants or its languages? Tell us in the comments. 🛠️ HOW THIS VIDEO WAS MADE The script was written with the help of AI, then researched, fact-checked and edited for the final video.
