It was a very dramatic and chaotic race, with a huge crash involving 13 drivers on the first lap, a red flag, a restart, and another crash that took out the championship leader. Here are some of the details: The race was held on 30 August 1998 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. The race was run in extremely wet weather, which made the track very slippery and reduced visibility. The pole-sitter was Mika Häkkinen of McLaren-Mercedes, followed by his teammate David Coulthard and Michael Schumacher of Ferrari. On the first lap, Coulthard lost control of his car on the Kemmel Straight and spun across the track, triggering a massive pile-up that involved 13 drivers, including Häkkinen, Schumacher, Eddie Irvine, Jacques Villeneuve, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Alexander Wurz, Olivier Panis, Rubens Barrichello, Mika Salo, Ricardo Rosset, Johnny Herbert and Toranosuke Takagi. The race was red-flagged and stopped to clear the debris and rescue the drivers. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured. After a delay of more than an hour, a second attempt was made to start the race, with only 18 cars on the grid. However, on lap 25, he came up to lap Coulthard, who had rejoined the race after repairing his car. Coulthard slowed down to let Schumacher pass, but stayed on the racing line. Schumacher did not see him in the spray and hit the back of his McLaren at high speed, damaging his Ferrari’s front wing and right front wheel. Schumacher had to retire from the race and was furious with Coulthard. He stormed into the McLaren garage to confront him, but was restrained by Ferrari personnel and stewards. Hill inherited the lead again, with his teammate Ralf Schumacher behind him. They were followed by Jean Alesi in the Sauber-Petronas and Giancarlo Fisichella in the Benetton-Playlife. In the latter stages of the race, Ralf Schumacher was catching Hill and asked for permission to overtake him. However, Hill refused to give up his position and told team owner Eddie Jordan that they should either race for first place and risk ending up with nothing or hold their positions and secure a 1–2 finish for Jordan. Jordan agreed with Hill and ordered both drivers to maintain their positions. Hill crossed the finish line first to take his 22nd and final F1 win and Jordan’s first ever F1 win. Ralf Schumacher finished second to complete Jordan’s only F1 1–2 finish. Alesi finished third to take his 32nd and last F1 podium.
