Deborah Erickson raised two sons, taught at universities, and spent decades building a career, all without ever really learning how to cook. Then she lost her vision in her early fifties and everything changed. In this episode of Driven By Purpose, Isaac Shapiro, Mike Ghesser, and Evan Rosenblum sit down with Chef Deborah Erickson, executive chef and founder of The Blind Kitchen. Deborah's story is one of the most unexpected and inspiring on the show. After losing her vision to retinitis pigmentosa, she enrolled at the Oregon Commission for the Blind, discovered a love for cooking she never knew she had, went to culinary school as the only blind student in her class, and eventually took a leap of faith to launch The Blind Kitchen, a business dedicated to teaching blind and visually impaired people how to cook safely and confidently. She did all of this while learning what it truly means to solve problems with creativity instead of sight. In this episode, we explore: ▫️ How Deborah went from opening cans and microwaving meals her whole life to graduating culinary school blind and founding a business built around accessible cooking ▫️ The tools, techniques, and mindset shifts that make a kitchen truly accessible for someone with vision loss, including why a long wooden spoon is one of the most powerful tools in The Blind Kitchen ▫️ What it actually feels like to navigate culinary school without vision, from the social awkwardness of classmates who did not know how to talk to her, to mastering the geography of a professional kitchen in eight to ten months ▫️ How Deborah built her team during COVID, why quitting has never once felt like an option, and what drives her to show up every single day for people who need what she has built ▫️ The conversation that sparked a new vision for Clean Logic's Dining in the Dark event, and why food may be one of the most powerful tools we have for building empathy around disability If you believe purpose is something you discover, not something you are handed, this episode is for you.
