King Nzinga a Nkuwu became Joao I. His son, King Afonso I, built Kongo into a literate, internationally connected Christian kingdom, sent his own son Henrique to study in Portugal, who became the first Black Catholic bishop in history, and personally corresponded with the Pope and the Portuguese crown as a fellow head of state. Then the Atlantic slave trade arrived, and the same partnership Kongo built in good faith became the machine that helped tear the kingdom apart.
