Social capital is created before and after an event, not during it. Bert-Ola Bergstrand of Social Capital Forum on building community, the three kinds of relationships, and why most conferences waste them. This is TBLI Radical Truth with Robert Rubinstein. Bergstrand calls it the Elvis problem: the great artist has left the building, everyone goes home, and the value creation that was supposed to follow never happens. His answer is that a gathering is not the thing, the journey around it is, and almost nobody accounts for that. He also insists social capital is action related in a way other capital is not. It is a living system, so it decays the moment you stop tending it. He estimates he has spent forty to sixty hours a week on it for fifteen years. Bert-Ola Bergstrand is chairman and co-founder of Social Capital Forum in Sweden. He has worked on social capital in business, civil society and public institutions for decades, wrote a book on the virtual society, and was an early participant in SOCAP. WHAT'S COVERED - Why you cannot start a community, only convene one, and what listening for the energy actually means - The Power of Pull: build a place people want to be rather than pushing something at them - The difference between a community and a network, and the test he uses to tell them apart - Bonding, bridging and linking capital, and why the third one is the hardest to build - Why linking capital is contested: it is access to power, so the relationship is never equal - Learning to see the border of a room, because the smartest people are usually just outside it - Homophily: why every community drifts towards people who already agree, and what that costs - Why social capital only gets priced when it fails, with the war in Ukraine as the example - What the pandemic did to digital community building, and why reach got harder afterwards - Whether a DAO is a community or just infrastructure, and why the distinction matters - Open versus closed: you will get some rotten eggs, and closing the room is still worse - The Nordic model, and what happens when social capital is built into state institutions CHAPTERS 00:00 From a village in northern Sweden to convening worldwide 06:33 What social capital actually is, and why it is capital 10:26 Building spaces people want to be in 11:40 The Power of Pull, and are you here to sell or to share? 13:31 Someone has to convene, and it starts with listening 15:42 Introverts, extroverts, and welcoming people into the room 16:15 Community or network?
