On today's 2 minute garden tip, I show you how to grow winter tomatoes anywhere! You don't need warm winters to grow tomatoes: all you need is a sunny window for easy overwintering! Gardeners can start tomato seeds in late summer or early fall when temperatures are still warm to give each tomato plant a head start. If early frost threatens the plants, simply carry them in at night and bring them back outside in the day when temperatures safely warm. Once temperatures get too cold longterm, tomato plants can be moved indoors in front of a sunny window or given a supplemental grow light. With enough light, tomato plants can flower and fruit all winter. In places with reduced light, tomatoes will grow too slowly to fruit, but the plants will give you a massive head start on the new season, providing tomato harvests months ahead of schedule. Select smaller determinate tomato varieties or Dwarf Tomato Project varieties when overwintering tomato plants for easy management and better results. Seed links for one of my favorite tomato varieties for overwintering are below. When overwintering plants indoors, use Indoor Potting Mix and low odor fertilizers. Many organic fertilizers will stink up your house, and outdoor potting mixes often contain fungus gnat eggs that will hatch at room temperature. I am overwintering tomatoes in my unheated sunroom that stays above freezing all winter, so I am using outdoor mix and organic fertilizers since it isn't part of my living space.
