Breaking news from space: astronomers have found the first known green star, and it breaks the colour rules. A star’s colour is set by its temperature. At about 3,000 kelvin it’s red, around 4,000 it’s orange, near 10,000 it’s white, and above 25,000 it’s blue. There is no green on that list. Even the Sun’s light peaks in green, but it also gives off every other colour, so together it looks white. Now meet WD J1330+6435, a white dwarf, the dead core of a star about 280 light-years away. At roughly 4,000 degrees Celsius, it should look orange, like Arcturus, a bright orange star at about the same temperature. Instead, it’s green. Why? In October 2026, Mark Hollands and Boris Gänsicke’s team at the University of Warwick reported in RAS Techniques and Instruments that the star swallowed rocky debris from its own planets. That loaded its atmosphere with calcium, lithium and especially sodium. Normally, sodium absorbs only a narrow slice of the spectrum. But it gets even crazier. White dwarf atmospheres are incredibly dense. The coolest can reach the density of water, millions of times denser than the Sun’s atmosphere. Hollands says sodium atoms are constantly bombarded by helium atoms, which smears their absorption across yellow, orange and red. Think of a camera filter: normally sodium is a thin one, but here the dense atmosphere turns it into a wide one that blocks the warm colours and leaves green behind. The team ran the star’s light through a model of human colour vision, and the result is chartreuse. A star’s colour is set by its temperature. Unless it eats its own planets.
