Two brother have been jailed for their roles in the shooting of an innocent man in Brierfield in March. Lee Barnett was today (December 2) sentenced to 28 years and Neil Barnett was jailed for seven years and two months. Neil Barnett was also given an extended licence period of three years after he was classed as a dangerous offender. Shortly before 7pm on March 10, this year, defendant Neil Barnett had gone into a verbal dispute with a group of teenagers at the Morrisons store in Colne Road, Brierfield. After accusing the teenagers of pushing in front of him in a queue, Barnett went onto direct a racial slur at one of them once they had all left the store. He also said: “I will kill you and your family.” Barnett was followed into an alleyway and a physical altercation took place, from which he came off worse. When Neil Barnett got back to his feet he placed a nine second call to his brother, Lee Barnett, who quickly made his way to Brierfield from Burnley. Witnesses reported seeing the brothers banging metal objects on railings close to a community centre in Brierfield town centre as they sought out the people who Neil Barnett had been in dispute with. At that point the group who had earlier fought with Neil Barnett ran off in different directions, as well as innocent bystanders who had nothing to do with the earlier assault or verbal altercation. One of those was the 19-year-old victim, who after getting split from his friends, was approached by axe-wielding Neil Barnett. The pair grappled to the floor, before Lee Barnett shouted at his brother to: “Hold him. Hold him.” Lee Barnett then shot the victim at close range with a shotgun, causing serious injuries to his face. Thankfully those injuries were not life-threatening.
