A neighbor drops by. A man and a woman live together in a flat, often finding themselves arguing, at odds and under stress from work. But their volatile existence is interrupted when their downstairs neighbor, Steve, comes by, telling them there's water from their apartment leaking into his. Steve finagles a cup of tea with the woman, chatting eccentrically but amiably enough. But that's not the end of the matter. Steve comes back and has another cup of tea, insinuating himself into their home in a series of increasingly unpredictable visits. Directed and written by Rupert Friend -- whom audiences may know from his acting work in JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH and Wes Anderson films like ASTEROID CITY and THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME -- this short dramedy is a sharp, dynamic and witty snapshot of an increasingly needy, erratic neighbor who craves company and connection, however he can get it. Written with an ear for flinty, complex dialogue and character detail and captured with an eye for sweeping, energetic camerawork, the film swerves as wildly as Steve's moods and whims, both punchy and poignant as it explores how social isolation can warp us and the world around us in erratic and often funny ways. We meet the couple upstairs in the midst of a tense confrontation, bickering over work and generally discontented in their close quarters. But in the midst of their contretemps, Steve erupts into their lives, persnickety about water leaking into his apartment before essentially inviting himself to stay for tea. The woman accommodates him, and Steve curiously brings out a warmth and solicitousness that she doesn't show her partner. Yet as they chat, the clever dialogue plants the seeds of doubt that Steve is not entirely as he seems. Despite the woman's offer to take care of the leak, Steve returns for another cup of tea and more conversation. Featuring the talents of Academy Award winner and nominee Colin Firth and Keira Knightley, respectively, the film is ridiculously stacked with stellar, even iconic acting talent, but it's notable for showcasing Firth's agility and facility with a certain quicksilver, brittle and sharp comedic style, veering from polite to angry to vulnerable to demanding, his dialogue embroidered with highly specific and often extremely droll detail. It's a mannered performance on the surface, but there's also a genuine vein of feeling, of someone deeply in need of fellowship and struggling with his social invisibility. Steve is a proverbial piece of work, but at his core, he's also lonely and isolated, and his verbosity often feels like it's coming from a man who hasn't really spoken to anyone in a long time and perhaps never had a handle on societal mores and niceties. He has much to say, has bottled up a lot of emotion and will have his human contact -- and by the time STEVE wraps up, we believe he will do anything, however unhinged, to get it. The film was originally released in 2010, but with its portrait of a man eager to feel seen and heard, no matter what, it feels more relevant than ever, especially in our age of social media, where visibility has replaced connection and comments and likes somehow substitute for communication and listening.
