Iāve been building outdoor rinks since the early 90s. What started as a childhood love of hockey has now become something I get to share with my own kids on our little farm in Southern Ontario. Over the past few years, Iāve been building and maintaining our pond rink ā not just as a place to skate, but as a way to create memories, spend time outside, and keep a small piece of Canadian winter alive. When I started this YouTube channel, the goal was simple: to create an archive of our outdoor life, farm projects, family moments, and the kind of experiences my kids could look back on one day. Then something unexpected happened. Randy, a filmmaker from Manitoba and the creator of The Outdoor Hockey Club, reached out while working on a documentary about outdoor hockey, pond rinks, and the people who keep that tradition going. He came out to film me working on the rink and skating with my kids. A few months later, on Earth Day, we were invited to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto for Small Ponds. Big Goals., an event presented by Ducks Unlimited and the NHL. The event featured a preview of the documentary ICEMAKERS and brought together people who care deeply about hockey, wetlands, conservation, and the outdoor places that make these experiences possible. I also had the chance to sit on a panel and talk about our pond, our rink, and what outdoor hockey means to our family. To be clear, Iām not officially āinā the Hockey Hall of Fame ā but walking those halls, seeing our little pond rink connected to a bigger story about hockey and conservation, and having my family and friends there to share it, was a pretty surreal experience. This video is about that journey: from building backyard ice for my kids to seeing that story carried all the way to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
