A glacier collapsed high in Nepal. Minutes later, disaster struck China. On August 26, 2026, a section of glacier on Mount Langtang Lirung fractured at roughly 5,200 meters above sea level. The collapsing ice and rock accelerated down the Himalayan terrain, collecting sediment, moraine debris and water along the way. What began as an ice-rock avalanche transformed into a massive debris flow. The flow traveled roughly 22 kilometers through the mountains before reaching Gyirong Port in China's Xizang Autonomous Region — only about six to seven minutes after the initial collapse. Roads were destroyed, buildings and infrastructure were damaged, and access to the disaster zone became extremely difficult. By September 2, rescue teams and heavy equipment were pushing deeper into the affected area as scientists continued monitoring the surrounding mountains for additional hazards. In this episode of Faultline Files, we reconstruct the disaster from its source in Nepal to its impact in China and examine how one glacier failure became a cascading cross-border disaster. Glacier fracture. Ice-rock avalanche. Debris flow. Gyirong Port. One chain reaction. Roughly 22 kilometers. Only minutes from collapse to impact. Information current as of September 2, 2026.
