There’s a few skills that I deem as being sort of fundamental for my particular way of making, and perhaps one of the most important, beyond obviously being able to throw and trim, and so on, is tap centring. The thing is, it isn’t something that I only do when trimming pots, I also tap centre when waxing and glazing them. I went through my banks of footage to look for the moments I use this technique and it pops up all the time. Ultimately, it helps you save time, it trivialises getting the pots positioned centrally on the wheel and instead of using the method where you top and start constantly, making small adjustments as you go, it’s rolled into a more continuous technique that favours speed, (it’s must easier to tap centre a pot that’s spinning relatively rapidly, as opposed to one that’s turning at a snails pace). My making processes often involve centring multiple components, multiple times as they’re trimmed. If, each time I needed to centre something, it took me 15-60 seconds, I would be endlessly stopping and starting and it would slow me down considerably, whereas once you’ve mastered how to tap centre, it almost becomes a subconscious act. I also believe it teaches you how to read the movement of the vessel on the wheel more accurately and it can be so useful for minute, instant corrections. In my opinion, there are lots of unusual methods for teaching this skill that overly complicate the process. Fundamentally, if you understand the “theory” behind when you have to tap, it makes the whole thing much easier to learn as it’s a skill that can be done in many ways, yet the theory always remains the same. For instance, some people suggest tapping at 18:00 on the pot as it spins, others say between 15:00 - 17:00. There’s no difference in where you tap beyond your comfort and essentially, you tap the pot at the point where it’s most off-centre as it’s spinning around close to your dominant, tapping, hand. As you tap, and the closer to centre it gets, the less force you need. This means that often you begin with a few forceful taps, when they get lighter and more careful as the pot comes to residue in the middle. Now, this entire skill is made harder when you’re new to throwing on the wheel, as typically, the pots themselves won’t be thrown fully centred, thus whilst it is possible to tap centre them so they spin perfectly on that misshapen pots central axis, visually it’s much harder to identify when it’s centred. As your skill progresses and your pots become more accurately thrown, the easier it becomes in essence, as you’re working with a pot that’s more consistent. By the way, I have a whole YouTube video that demonstrates my approach in FAR greater detail, which you can find by searching YouTube for “how to tap center”. Ultimately it’s a game of practice. You can use poorly thrown old leather hard pots, metal tins, jars, old plant pots, anything. Don’t use something that’s too light, as it takes a bit more finesse and practice. #pottery #ceramics #wheelthrownpottery #craft #clay
