Last week, my parents iPhone which is connected to LTE all the time was using an incredible amount of data and were getting charged for going over their limit several times. I didn’t know about it until now so I needed to stop the data leak quickly. So what’s causing this is a bunch of apps that are still running in the background. My parents who are older and don’t have WiFi didn’t know that these apps were still running when the phone was sitting on the home screen. On this phone there are a lot of apps open right now but the one I’m thinking that’s causing most of the data usage is the Maps app. To me that app shouldn’t be running when you’re not actively using it. The first thing we need to look at is Background App Refresh. It allows apps to continue to use data while the app is still running but you’re not using it. Each installed app is listed here and you can turn each one on or off individually or completely turn off Background App Refresh for every app on the phone. You’ll have to decide which app you’ll allow to have continual access to data. This phone almost always is on LTE data so I’ll be turning this setting off for the entire phone. Then you can double tap the home button and swipe up on each app to shut them down. You may find that some apps don’t work correctly with Background App Refresh turned off so turn it back on for the apps you think will need it. After doing all this we haven’t been getting any more extra data charges on this phone. And one thing I want you to remember after watching this video is to go and shut down some apps occasionally on the iPhone especially if you know someone who is pretty much using LTE daily, this will potentially help them avoid extra data charges.
