https://kinsmanchurch.com/ WE ARE MANY, BUT WE ARE ONE At Kinsman Baptist Church Geelong today, (Sunday 5th July 2026) we read from 1 Corinthians 12 and considered the well-known line from the Australian song I Am Australian: "We are one, but we are many." The song is a beautiful expression of national unity, celebrating the idea that people from many different backgrounds can belong to one nation. But the Apostle Paul presents something even deeper. In 1 Corinthians 12, the emphasis is not simply that many people belong to one community. Rather, many believers have become one body through the work of the Holy Spirit. "For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body..." (1 Corinthians 12:13) Paul is not merely calling Christians to get along with one another. He is declaring a spiritual reality that God Himself has accomplished. We are united to Christ, and because we are united to Christ, we are united to one another. This is why Paul can say: "The eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee." (1 Corinthians 12:21) Every member needs every other member because each shares in the same spiritual life. The church is not simply an organisation of like-minded people; it is the living body of Christ. Paul's point is not that we should strive to become one body. We already are one body. His exhortations to love, serve, honour and care for one another all flow from that reality. This same truth is repeated throughout the New Testament: "There is one body, and one Spirit... one Lord, one faith, one baptism." (Ephesians 4:4–6) "For as we have many members in one body... so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another." (Romans 12:4–5) What does this mean for us at Kinsman? It means that no member is insignificant or optional. The one who faithfully prays, the one who welcomes people at the door, the one who stacks chairs, the one who teaches God's Word, the one who quietly encourages others; each has been placed in the body by God for the good of the whole. Our differences are not obstacles to unity; they are God's design for unity. As Paul reminds us: "But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him." (1 Corinthians 12:18) We are many, but we are one. Not because we chose one another. Not because we all think alike. Not because we share the same background. But because, by one Spirit, Christ has joined us to Himself; and therefore to one another.
