The new Thar finally gets a grab handle, a dead pedal and power steering you can turn with one finger. It still has no climate control. We put the new Mahindra Thar OG next to the original 2020 Thar to go through every change, inside, outside and under the skin. The list of fixes is long. The new Thar gets electric power steering, an adjustable driver’s armrest, better seats, brown interiors instead of all black, a larger screen with more adventure statistics, a wireless charger, power window switches on the doors, a rear parking camera and a rear wiper. A start button means you no longer need the key to start the engine or open the fuel filler. It has terrain modes for Normal, Snow, Mud and Sand; 19-inch wheels instead of 18-inch; rear disc brakes instead of drums; and a new chassis with a penta-link rear suspension that has improved the ride. The petrol makes 10bhp more, the diesel 20bhp more, and both get 30Nm more torque. Some things haven't changed at all: no climate control, no auto headlights, a manual day-night mirror, the same fiddly AC vents, a manual handbrake, and a steering wheel that adjusts only for rake. The wheel arches still turn the back seat into a four-seater, and the grille hasn't improved. The ride is better but still a bit bouncy next to the Thar Roxx. The new Thar also costs more: the petrol automatic 4x4 is up ₹4.2 lakh from its 2020 launch price of ₹13.55 lakh, and the diesel automatic 4x4 is up ₹5.2 lakh from ₹13.75 lakh. Mahindra has moved on with its electric XEV 9S, XUV 7XO, Scorpio N, and Thar Roxx, but the three-door Thar remains at the heart of the brand.
