How to talk with your Inner Child - Conscious Parenting with Vivek Patel Fostering a deep and safe relationship to our inner child is as important as creating a connected, safe relationship to our (physical) children. It's not something many of us think about on a daily basis, and yet that inner relationship affects us in every moment. The quality of that relationship certainly affects how we treat our kids. How we respond to them, how we react to them, much of that is unconscious and just happens in the moment. But it's not random. It's based on the patterns wired into our brains and nervous systems. Many of these patterns were created in our formative years. They were not curated based on well thought out values and principles, for the most part. They were largely our parents and caregivers passing on the patterns that they themselves had imposed upon them. Thus the cycle continues. This is why we say conscious parenting is cycle breaking. It is therefore important and helpful to rewrite those patterns consciously and bring them into alignment with the values that we have chosen. A large part of this of course is to think deeply and study to figure out what are our own values. But that is a topic for another video. 😀 In this video, I explore how to talk to our own inner child in a way that helps it feel safe, seen, understood, and free. I know many of my less than ideal reactions come from trauma and fear responses. I'm trying to feel safe in a situation that feels unsafe. The problem is, most of the time those reactions do not actually bring me safety, nor even the feeling of safety. They are responding to an entirely different situation. Even though on the outside I'm working with a four year old who's screaming, in my subconscious, and in my body it can feel like I am myself a child under attack. Many of the survival strategies we developed as children are no longer helpful. They were necessary at the time and I honor them, but I also choose to learn new and more effective ones. Here are some of the things I say to my inner child: . "Little Vivek, I love you. You are always safe with me. You are free to play, free to explore, free to be who you are. . I believe in you. I will listen to you. I LOVE to listen to you. Your feelings are valid. Your experience is important to me. . When you fall, I will pick you up. When you cry, I will comfort you. When you're afraid or sad. I will hold you. . I'm here for you. You can relax into me. I am safe. You are safe." . The more little Vivek believes this, the less he reacts. He trusts me to care for him. It's also the case that when he does have a big feeling come up, he turns to me knowing that I will accept him and comfort him. . The results of this is that less of those feelings leak out onto my children and other people in my life. . I invite you to watch this video and share your thoughts and insights in the comments.
