The Blue Cats' Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/singaporethebluecats/ From December 30, 2023, all drinks in Singapore, including bubble tea and freshly made beverages like coffee from Starbucks, must have Nutri-Grade labels. The grading system uses letters A through D, with A being the healthiest and D being the least healthy. The grades are determined by two factors: sugar levels and saturated fat levels per 100ml of drink. Importantly, the system doesn't distinguish between natural and added sugars or fats, meaning 100% fruit juice still receives a poor grade due to natural sugar content, and full cream milk scores poorly due to natural saturated fats and sugars. A key feature of the system is that only drinks graded C or D are required to display their labels prominently. Drinks with A or B grades can choose whether to show their labels, which explains why consumers rarely see A or B grade labels - companies often prefer not to display them. For drinks manufactured before the system's implementation, Nutri-Grade stickers must be applied regardless of grade. Artificial sweeteners don't help drinks achieve an A grade, as any sweetener automatically prevents the drink from receiving the top rating, typically resulting in a B grade instead. Since December 30, 2023, freshly prepared drinks from coffee chains and bubble tea outlets must also display Nutri-Grade information, though this can appear on menus rather than individual drinks. Smaller businesses receive some flexibility as they need more resources to implement the labeling system. Additionally, drinks graded D face advertising restrictions - they cannot be advertised on media platforms, though they can have posters or banners at points of sale as long as the Nutri-Grade is clearly displayed. The system appears to be effective in influencing consumer behavior. Studies show that people consciously or subconsciously choose drinks with A or B ratings while avoiding C or D graded beverages. This consumer response has prompted companies to reformulate their products by reducing sugar levels to achieve better Nutri-Grade ratings. The system addresses the significant role sugar plays in weight gain, and removing or reducing sugar content leads to better weight management outcomes for consumers.
