Ram, Scout, and Ford are all building vehicles with a gas engine that never touches the wheels. It's called an EREV — and one industry outlet literally called it "the hybrid technology nobody understands." As a battery and powertrain engineer, let me fix that. An EREV (extended-range electric vehicle) is a series hybrid: the wheels are driven only by electric motors, and the gas engine exists purely as an onboard generator making electricity. It's mechanically incapable of driving the car. That single design choice unlocks four real advantages: the engine runs at constant RPM in its optimum efficiency band (as one expert put it, because the workload never changes, nearly any engine can be tuned to be very efficient in this role); no transmission or driveshaft from the engine means less weight and fewer moving parts than a PHEV; you need a much smaller, cheaper battery — critical for heavy, un-aerodynamic trucks, since towing halves the range of ANY vehicle; and you're never dependent on public charging. The real numbers (manufacturer targets — neither is on sale yet): Ram's EREV pickup carries a ~92 kWh battery (69.7 usable) for ~145 miles of electric range, uses a 3.6L Pentastar V6 as its generator with a 27-gallon tank for ~690 miles total, tows 14,000 lbs, hits 0-60 in ~4.5s, and still DC fast-charges up to 145 kW (~50 miles in 10 minutes) — arriving late 2026. Scout's "Harvester" uses a ~63 kWh LFP pack for ~150 electric miles and 500+ total, with a naturally aspirated four-cylinder generator, starting under $60,000 in 2027. Scout says EREV reservations have dwarfed those for their pure-electric versions. Why 150 miles changes everything: the average American drives ~37 miles a day, so you'd cover a typical day four times over before the engine ever starts. Monday to Friday it's an electric car; on a towing weekend the generator takes over and you refuel in five minutes. The honest catch nobody covers: this only works if you plug in. If you don't, you're hauling a heavy battery and burning gas to charge it through multiple lossy conversions — genuinely worse than a regular hybrid. Analysts note many PHEV owners never plug in, and there's no data yet on whether EREV owners will. The three questions that decide it: Can you charge where you park? Is your driving short-daily-plus-occasional-long? Do you tow or go where chargers don't exist? 🔗 VERIFIED SOURCES: CNBC — Ford & Ram pivot to EREVs (series hybrid explained, ~150 mi EV range): https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/05/ford-ram-pickup-trucks-erev-ev.html Cars.com — Ram Ramcharger full specs (145 mi EV, 690 mi total, 91.8 kWh): https://www.cars.com/articles/2026-ram-1500-ramcharger-will-have-145-miles-of-electric-range-690-miles-of-hybrid-range-and-get-20-mpg-505597/ TopSpeed — "the hybrid technology nobody understands": https://www.topspeed.com/hybrid-technology-nobody-understands/ InsideEVs — how EREVs work (constant-RPM efficiency, series hybrid): https://insideevs.com/features/722276/extended-range-electric-vehcles-explained/ TopElectricSUV — Scout Harvester details (63 kWh LFP, 4-cyl generator): https://topelectricsuv.com/hybrid-trucks/range-extender-models-upcoming/ KBB — Ford CEO on EREVs (towing, battery cost, reservations): https://www.kbb.com/car-news/ford-ceo-well-develop-range-extended-evs FREE PDF → "EV Mistakes That Reduce Your Range By 30% And How To Avoid Them"👉 https://shayanev.com/ 1-on-1 EV Consultation 👉 https://shayanev.gumroad.com/l/xqigtj Free EV Battery health calculator 👉 https://shayanev.com/ Battery Management Course👉https://shayanev.gumroad.com/l/rbwrqa Try BMS Simulator Free : https://bmslive.vercel.app/ ⏱ TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 — An engine that never touches the wheels 1:05 — The one-sentence version (series hybrid) 2:20 — Why it's actually clever (4 advantages) 4:10 — The real numbers: Ram vs Scout 5:45 — Why 150 electric miles changes everything 6:50 — The honest catch (you HAVE to plug in) 8:00 — Who should buy one (3 questions) 🔔 Subscribe for battery & powertrain engineer breakdowns — real data, no hype. #EREV #ExtendedRangeEV #RamCharger #ScoutMotors #SeriesHybrid #BatteryEngineer #EVExplained #PHEV #ElectricTruck #EVvsHybrid
