KA2284 5 LED VU Meter Using 3.7V Battery | DIY Radio Signal Level Indicator Project Description In this project, I built a 5-dot LED VU meter using the KA2284 LED level meter driver IC. I designed this circuit to connect to my radio and visually indicate changes in the audio signal level using five LEDs. Instead of using the same LED colours, I used three yellow LEDs and two red LEDs to create a more attractive visual effect. When the audio signal changes, the LEDs respond accordingly, making the radio more interesting to use. Components Used - KA2284 5-dot LED level meter driver IC - 3 yellow LEDs - 2 red LEDs - 5 kΩ potentiometer for signal sensitivity adjustment - Resistors as required by the circuit - Capacitors for signal coupling and response adjustment - 3.7V rechargeable lithium-ion battery - Radio audio signal connection My Circuit Modification The original circuit uses a 10 kΩ potentiometer, but I found that adjusting the sensitivity range was difficult. Therefore, I replaced it with a 5 kΩ potentiometer. This modification made it easier for me to adjust the response of the VU meter when connected to my radio. I also tested the circuit with a 3.7V battery to make it suitable for a compact, battery-powered project. Important Note About the Supply Voltage According to the KA2284 datasheet, the IC's specified operating supply range is approximately 3.5V to 16V. Therefore, a 3.7V lithium-ion battery is within the specified range when sufficiently charged, although the voltage drops as the battery discharges. The recommended external LED supply resistor values in the application circuit are intended for higher supply voltages, so LED brightness and performance may differ at 3.7V. Reference: "KA2284/KA2285 Datasheet" (https://radio-hobby.org/uploads/datasheet/179/ka22/ka2284%20ka2285.pdf) This is an experimental DIY electronics project. I recommend testing the circuit at different battery voltages to understand its performance.
