"The Tornado of September 11th" - The Rear Flank, Ep. XXXI. September is usually when I finally let go. After months of forecasts, thousands of miles, sleepless nights, and long days beneath the sky, storm chasing begins to fade with the season. But this September felt different. I couldn't stop looking at the forecasts. Couldn't stop wondering if there was one more storm left to chase. So I kept going. I chased through northeastern Minnesota after my Flight Nurse shift knowing almost nothing would probably happen. Then came Iowa. More than 1,200 miles of driving for a setup I knew had a good chance of becoming a linear mess — and in the end, little more than a shelf cloud.cAt some point, I started wondering what the hell I was doing. Maybe it was time to throw in the towel. Then came September 11, 2026. A cold front was crashing through western Minnesota. There was just enough instability. Just enough shear. And maybe — before everything lined out — just enough of a window. I almost didn't go. But something told me to play one more hand. Near Artichoke and Alberta, Minnesota, that final chase produced something I had never seen in fifteen years of storm chasing: A September tornado. This film isn't only about that tornado. It's about the busted forecasts. The wasted miles. The irrational decisions. The feeling that comes when the season gets quiet, but something inside you doesn't. Maybe I wasn't chasing one last tornado. Maybe I just wasn't ready for it to be over. THE TORNADO OF SEPTEMBER 11TH. Chasing Northeastern Minnesota simply out of desperation 4:17 - September 8, 2026. Iowa. More than likely a linear MCS day, but enough low level shear for the slim chance of a QLCS tornado. A 1,200 mile round trip venture for something I wouldn't even bat an eye at during the regular season. Yet here I am... 9:33 - The Tornado of September 11th. Today feels different... 12:46 - The storms are beginning to congeal together, and I am fearing that this chase may be over. 13:49 - A call merger produces a tornado near Artichoke Minnesota. 17:39 - I look around and notice the shape of the mesocyclone above me. The tornado lifts, but then appears to be still on the ground unconcerned, as evidenced by dirt swirling on the ground beneath the wall cloud. 19:07 - Time to go! Rain thickens up under the mesocyclone as it heads directly at me. I reposition to the southeast to stay ahead of it. 20:05 - The tornado is still in there, rain-wrapped, but I can see it backlit by the copious lightning. 22:31 - The Tornado may be lifting, but radar still shows a vortex signature. I reposition to stay with the mesocyclone. A new tornado warning is issued. 23:18 - I head to Hancock, Minnesota to check on the town, as on radar, the rotation couplet appears to pass right over the town. 23:56 - Arrived in Hancock, Minnesota, relieved that no damage occurred. 24:40: Outro. A reflection on the 'why' behind the chase, and the humanity that we cannot forget exists out there. The good, and the bad.
