Most coverage of this disaster starts in the valley. This video starts four thousand metres above it, because that is where the thing that destroyed those villages began, and because what left the mountain and what arrived at the bottom were not the same size. That difference is the entire story. A mass of rock and ice detaches at high altitude. It falls. On the way down, friction converts its own ice into water, and what began as a rockfall stops behaving like rock and starts behaving like a fluid. Then it travels, and as it travels it scours the valley beneath it, tearing up moraine, sediment, boulders, trees and river water and absorbing all of it. It arrives at settlements many times larger than the mass that originally fell. The valley did not just carry the flow. The valley fed it. That is why survivors of these events describe hearing something before they saw anything, and why what reached the villages was not a flood in any ordinary sense. A debris flow is majority solid material by volume, closer to wet concrete than to water. It carries boulders. It does not inundate buildings, it strikes them. In the highest energy sections it removes the ground itself. WHAT THIS VIDEO EXPLAINS Why permafrost, not rock strength, is what holds high Himalayan slopes together What actually happens to a falling rock and ice mass on the way down Entrainment, and why these flows multiply in volume as they descend Why a debris flow destroys structures a river flood would leave standing Why warning times in steep valleys are measured in minutes Why landslide-dammed lakes mean the danger does not end when the flow stops What the 2021 Chamoli disaster taught researchers, and why they expected another A NOTE ON THIS VIDEO Figures for this event have been revised repeatedly and are still changing. Every number shown on screen carries the date and source it came from. Where the science is not yet settled, this video says so rather than filling the gap. There is no reconstruction footage of people here and no casualty figure in the thumbnail. The mechanism is the subject. People are still missing and their families are still waiting.
