What happens if Trump cuts off U.S. intelligence to Ukraine? Trump envoys reportedly threatened to cut U.S. intelligence sharing with Ukraine unless Kyiv stops striking Russian oil refineries, and everyone’s assuming that would leave Ukraine’s deep-strike campaign blind. I dig into what a cutoff actually took away during the 2025 intelligence pause, how France, Finland’s ICEYE and Japan’s iQPS have since given Ukraine independent eyes Washington can’t switch off, and why losing American intel might actually push Ukraine toward hitting refineries even more, not less. UPDATE: I recorded this video before two significant developments overnight, and I want to add the newest information here. First, Ukraine again experienced a serious gap in ballistic-missile warning. On October 12, five Russian S-400 missiles used in the ground-attack role struck Kyiv without the advance warning Ukraine normally receives from its partners. Overnight on October 13–14, Ukraine again received no partner warning before the FIRST wave of Russian ballistic missiles. There is an important clarification this morning: Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat says partner warnings DID arrive before the following three missile waves. So, as of right now, I do NOT think the evidence supports saying U.S. intelligence sharing has been completely switched off. What happened with those missed warnings remains unresolved. CBS reports that American officials blamed at least one failure on bad weather, while Ukrainian officials are reportedly skeptical and suspect information may have been withheld. It is also possible that a launch signature was missed or wasn't processed quickly enough. We simply don't know yet. Second, there is now a separate and troubling development involving Starlink. The New York Times, Reuters, and Ukrainian military sources report that SpaceX unexpectedly restricted Ukraine's military Starshield service overnight. This does NOT appear to be a complete Starlink blackout. The restrictions primarily affect terminals operating while moving at higher speeds, which are important for Ukrainian drone missions. Ukrainian forces say several missions were disrupted, and they received no advance warning that the change was coming. There is currently no confirmed evidence that the Trump administration ordered SpaceX to make this change. The timing, however, is obviously going to receive enormous scrutiny given Washington's recent pressure on Kyiv over strikes on Russian oil infrastructure. So the situation is moving very quickly. If anything, these developments reinforce one of the central arguments in today's video: American intelligence and communications support still provide Ukraine with capabilities that are difficult to replace quickly. Ukraine and Europe have built considerable redundancy, but that does not make the American layer unimportant. I'll continue following this closely as we learn whether these were technical failures, deliberate policy decisions, or something in between. Join the channel as a member!
