Two helicopters departed Catalina Island about 45 seconds apart. Both struck the Pacific Ocean. One recovered and continued flying. The other crashed, killing three people—including a pilot who had previously flown Marine One. How could two experienced pilots encounter such similar trouble, so close together? In this video, I examine the Catalina helicopter accident using the NTSB preliminary report, available ADS-B flight tracks, the first pilot’s reported account, and flight simulator recreations. Our illustrative reconstruction places the first helicopter’s water contact approximately 700 feet from the estimated location of the fatal crash. We look at: • The Mercy Air flight operated by Air Methods and the fatal REACH Air Medical Services flight • What the first pilot reported about visibility, descent, and contact with the water • Night vision goggles, bright-light bloom, and the difficulty of judging height over dark water • False horizons and the acceleration-induced illusion that can make a pilot feel the nose is pitching up • Relevant night-vision lessons from the Potomac midair collision • Why an instrument cross-check matters when outside visual references become unreliable We also remember pilot Steve Robinson, flight nurse Jessica deVries, and patient Catalina Hernandez Romero, and discuss the two survivors and the complications surrounding their transport to medical care. **The cause remains under investigation.** The possible explanations discussed here are analysis, not an NTSB probable-cause finding. Simulator sequences and animated flight paths are illustrative recreations—not footage of the accidents—and the water-contact locations and separation are estimates. What stands out to you about these two events? If you have experience flying helicopters at night or using NVGs, share your perspective below. God bless the victims, their families, and those who came to their aid. #Aviation #CatalinaIsland #Helicopter #AviationSafety #NTSB
