[Recorded September 27, 2026] Water doesn’t stop at the U.S.-Mexico border — and neither does the aquifer beneath the Santa Cruz River. This week on Western Water Highlights, we begin underground, where scientists from the United States and Mexico have completed a major binational study of a shared groundwater system covering roughly 1,500 square miles. The research provides a more complete scientific picture of an aquifer that supplies communities, agriculture, industry and ecosystems on both sides of the border. Then we head to New Mexico, where testing has found “forever chemicals” in 43 private wells near Santa Fe. Officials are now investigating how far the contamination has spread and whether it is continuing to move through the groundwater. In California, new laws will require proposed data centers to provide more information about water demand, available supplies, efficiency and drought planning. We also visit Suisun Marsh, where scientists are experimenting with managed wetlands that can produce zooplankton — essentially creating food for struggling native fish. One researcher has a memorable description for the idea: “salting the soup.” Also this week: companies participating in the Colorado River Basin Collaborative have committed $32 million toward water projects, with a goal of raising $100 million; World Economic Forum contributors describe the Colorado River Basin as facing “water bankruptcy”; and the federal government is again asking where the legal boundaries of the Waters of the United States should be drawn. Finally, we check the latest U.S. Drought Monitor. Monsoon rain has brought improvement to parts of Arizona and New Mexico, but severe flooding and long-term drought can exist in the same place at nearly the same time. Significant drought also remains across portions of Colorado, Wyoming and Utah.
