Though only around 200 years old, Brora’s story is deeply connected to the Highland Clearances and shaped by remarkable industries, people, and traditions that make it one of the most historic stops on the North Coast 500. Known as the “industrial village of the Highlands,” Brora once had: Britain’s most northerly coal mine Salt making and a brick works The famous Clynelish Distillery producing Brora whisky A woollen mill Early electricity generation for the community Narrated by Dr Nick Lindsay, Chairman of the Brora Heritage Society, this film brings Brora’s past to life with rare artifacts from the Brora Heritage Centre. You’ll also hear about three of Brora’s unforgettable local figures: Charles Hood – farmer and captain of the Sutherland Highland Rifles William Donaldson – Brora’s chemist and village druggist Alexander (Alec) Donaldson – his son, a First World War veteran who became known as Brora’s hermit Today, the Clyne Heritage Society is creating a brand new Heritage Centre in the old Clyne School, right on the A9 and the NC500 route.
